Can taking lots of prescription drugs your whole life make you a very sick person?

My whole life (21 years) my mother has been taking drugs. Shes been taking demerol illegally for at least 17 years and addition to that she takes countless prescription drugs to deal with the side effects of the demerol and the other prescription drugs, and she smokes at least a pack a day since she was 15. Every time i talk to her she is either sick or getting over an illness and she always has some new disease her newest one is fibromialgia. Shes almost 50 years old and i'm afraid shes going to die soon. I don't know exactly how many drugs she takes but i estimate its at LEAST 10 a day, but i'm sure its probably more. She has scars all over her face ad body because all she does is pick at herself and she always looks dazed. Im really worried about her but i feel its far to late to intervene. Why would a doctor prescribe so many drugs to one person if they know its hurting her? Can prescription drugs cause her to die soon?

Answer:
Long term abuse of prescription drugs can cause psychological and physical dependence, hypersensitivity, depression, impairs physical and mental abilities, anxiety, tremors, seizures, renal dysfunction, coma, weaken or destroy the liver which could be fatal...your mother needs rehab drug treatment.

Absolutely YES to drugs can cause all kinds of dis-ease (side effects) and make you a very sicko person.
Why Dr. write perscriptions? ..for money only. They are the legal drug dealer sanctioned by the State.
Sounds as if your mother is just one of many millions who have been destroyed by drugs!
definitely because most drugs are toxic to the kidneys and liver and impaired function of these organs can lead to systemic problems
She could be overmedicated and then again not. My mom takes 14 diff meds. All prescription. It's horrible. I take her to the doc myself. She's 84. Seems anything you say they give you a pill for. And some of the pills you get make other things go wrong so they give you a pill for that too. If you have such a big concern you should speak with her doc. If that doesn't help then get her to go to a diff doc. I recently told the doc mom was too dazed all day. He cut back on one of the meds and she's back now. If you don't tell the doc they have no way of knowing. And by all means you should tell the doc that she takes demerol. He may be giving her something that doesn't sit well with it. You have to get involved in her life to where you take her to the doc. I've known people that have gotten disgusted with life and just stopped taking all their meds. They feel a heck of a lot better too. weird. I don't suggest that, but I truly think people are way too overmedicated these days. My doc jumps on everything I say and is willing to give me a pill for it. I don't even like taking the 2 that I HAVE to take. No thanks. My advice would be to get involved with her doc visits. If youre still not sure then see if you can get her to switch docs. Good luck.
of course every drug has a side effect but doctors have reasons to perscribe what they do
Most drugs are toxic and are therefore a threat to one's overalll health, that is why they are prescribed by a professional who has to weigh up the benefits of a possible cure, relief of symptoms and/or increased quality of life.

It can be a case of being between a rock and a hard place when the medical professional and the sick person need to work together and decide.

Normally with highly toxic drugs, regular blood tests are required to monitor any changes in Liver/Kidney function and Blood Count etc. If the result is a concern then the drug can be stopped or dose decreased and again the overall effect will be weighed up against the effects of the ilness itself if left to its own devices.
I'm really sorry too hear this of your mother, but if i was you, it is never too late, take her to another Doctor get a referral for a full examination and see if there is anything you can do to get rid of or change her meds so that she is not in this condition that you have to see everyday and know it's not right for her to look like that. Your mom is only 50, you can still make a difference for her. God Bless.
