Perscription marijuana...why do family smoke it, instead of taking the pills?

A friend died from lung cancer. He had prescription marijuana within the pill form. According to him, it was remarkably helpful for his appetite. I guess I basically don't understand why someone would smoke it when the pill is supposed to be a superior pain-killer and appetite promoter.
I prominently know very little on the subject, so please instruct me.

Answers:    Because, and im not against the real use of medical marijuana, the miserable truth is that 99% of people who use it hold no significant medical need and they are ruining it for folks who honestly need it.
