Mental Retardations...?

well, i lately step up on this topic, bout MR within young children. one of the cause is lack of iodine during pregnancies. what bothers me is that, here is a statement saying "Mental retardation as a result of iodine defect can be exaggerated in the setting of concomitant deficiency of selenium or vitamin A" (emedicine).
what is it got to do beside selenium n vit.A to iodine?
is it part of thyroid synthesis?

Answer:
it seem it has nil to do with thyroid synthesis. i even studied thyroid syn. & don't remember anything almost vit. A.
the statement tells merely that iodine deficiency affects thyroid function cause mental R. also, vit. A & selenium causes neuronal affection (via another mechanism) cause also mental retardation.
so, iodine def. in crust of concomitant vit. A & selenium def. would aggravate MR... that is adjectives
