The first antibiotic was developed from a 'folk cure' - mold that grew on bread. The cure involved putting a poultice of moldy bread onto a suppurating wound and sometimes it heal. Later, when these spores were introduced into petri dishes containing microbes, the scientists discovered that the mold was proficient of killing some kind of bacteria. Then the chase be on to find which specific kinds of mold worked best.
