Answers: This happens surrounded by phamacy colleges all over the world: you buy sick rabbits or guinea pigs that own been infected near a specific disease, then you exam your formulation/hypothesis on several of the animals. We do this for thesis research.
We also oral exam the effects of certain drugs on strong white mice. And we do toxicity tests surrounded by brine shrimp (sea monkeys).
All the animals used are sacrificed afterwards, whether the meds work or not. They might still own the disease, only in need the symptoms, so killing them would prevent outbreaks. Also, who wishes hundreds of lab rats running around everywhere?
If the drugs are to be administered orally, we sometimes mix them into the food, but if they're bad-tasting or if we want to know the time of administration, we use a gavage. It's a long, wide-ranging, blunt-tipped attachment to a syringe. We hold the animal by the back of the collar and insert the gavage tube through the mouth, injecting the drug straight to the stomach.
Yes, it's cruel, but would you rather enjoy these tests done on relations? I don't enjoy it, and I'm not proud of it, but some things necessitate to be done to ensure the safety of race.
And yes, it did bother me at first. I thought I was going to cry the first time I force-fed and kill a white mouse, but you learn to block it out.
I don't know if they do it duplicate way everywhere, but I'm sure adjectives universities do something similar.
