Does lexapro contain a maoi?

I just want to know if lexapro contains a maoi because I have a cold and would like to know if I can take my cold medicine while taking my lexapro. The cold medicine says do not take with a maoi.

Answer:
Lexapro is not an MAOI, it is selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). in fact u must not take MAOI with SSRI drugs. u can take cold medicine (anti histamines) with SSRIs. however, first check this link:

Lexapro does not contain an MAOI.

Lexapro is a Selective-Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI), which raises levels of serotonin.
MAOI's actually raise serotonin levels as well by inhibiting an enzyme called monoamine oxidase that breaks down the serotonin upon reuptake.

Combining the medications or taking too much of just the one can lead to a condition called "Serotonin Syndrome." Some symptoms include: Agitation, sweating, diarrhea, mental status changes (restless, confusion), teeth chattering, clonus, hyperreflexia.

You should call your doctor's office to discuss cold medication alternatives or dosaging. In the meantime, you may take an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine HCl (benadryl), but you will probably feel rather sedated and that wont be useful if you have to work. :)
