Is it better to study pre-med or get a degree on biology if you want to study medicine??
Answer:
Pre-med is not a major. It's more of an intention. It just means that you are taking the courses required for medical school. You need to major in something else.
That something else can be ANYTHING. A lot of people who go on to medical school major in biology, because (1) the major includes many of the medical school pre-requisite courses and (2) they like biology.
Major in whatever interests you. If that's biology, great. If it's art history, or psychology, or something else, then choose that. College will be more enjoyable, and you'll probably get better grades if you study something you enjoy.
Pre-med is NOT a degree!!
You still need a regular major/minor. Study what is interesting to you and make sure you have your pre-reqs for medical school done by the time you need to apply. Any major can get into medical school.
The previous answer is correct. Most universities don't have a specific "pre-med" degree, but a few do. The University of Dayton is one that does. There's no real advantage to that track though.
As long as you get all the prerequisites, it doesn't matter what you major in. If you like biology, by all means major in it. But you don't have to. As a doctor, you'll write a lot. Maybe you should major in English. The days a doctor could just hang out a shingle and be guaranteed a decent income are long gone. I suggest you learn at least something about business. And if you really love art or history, go ahead and major in one of those.
It's no longer necessary for every med school applicant to be a cookie cutter replica of all the others. In fact most med schools like to see well-rounded applicants. One way to show that is to have a well rounded undergraduate education.
If you want to go to medical school, you should spend some time scanning through http://www.aamc.org . Somewhere in the midst of that rather large site are the requirements that each of the medical schools are looking for. You need to have a number of prerequisite courses, but past those, it really doesn't matter what you do. I had majors in chemistry and biology, but if I had it to do over again, I'd major in history. I don't use my physical chemistry course in medical practice, but the humanities will stay with you forever.
I would study biology. I love Boilogy and its good to get into med school or other things in medicine.
