In the US, a "GP", or general practitioner, is a licensed medical doctor who have completed just the internship (one year) after medical arts school. GPs are not family practitioners, who complete a three-year residency. A GP is trained to refer to specialists, and also consideration for patients with everyday ailments.
Gen medical practitioner are doctors who own little knowledge of adjectives parts of the body, and he prescribes medicines which are also gen surrounded by nature eg cold , cough, confusion, minor injuries, and other first aid services. He does not posses full knowledge of any subdivision of body.
Where as a specialist has less significant knowledge of adjectives the parts of body but he has detail (full) expertise of very small fragment of the body too.
That makes the difference
Before the days of specialisation, the residence used was RMP (Registered Medical Practitioner) and he served the society to the best of his ability. An expert in those days, the specialist be referred to ENT Specialist(Ear, nose and Throat), but in a minute with the shifting levels of lessons, even an MBBS thinks of doing MD/MS.

A specialist too have a MBBS degree but have opted to specilize surrounded by certain areas. eg,
. heart - cardiologist
. brain - neurologist
. bones- orthopedic
Which ability, when one has some small ailments one is suppose to move about to a general medical practitioner. But when a specilized treatment is required, a broad medical practitioner is not qualified to handle such cases.
One can specialize surrounded by medicine by doing a post graduate course within medicine i.e the Masters point...which is done after the completion of MBBS course.ie. MS or MD.
Not that a specialist does not have education of all parts of body or he or she is incapable to give you medicine for cold or fever and so on... why would a party suffering from common cold travel to a neuro-surgeon when one can easily run to a general medical practioner who charge much smaller amount than a specialist.
GMP are qualified doctors with straightforward degree (graduates surrounded by any discipline like MBBS, BHMS, BDS, BAMS etc) They are not specialised but diagnose & prescribe medicine for all medical problems/day to daytime problems such as , cough & cold, fever, body cramp, small surgeries, & so many others. In valise of some severe problem they may ask u to do certain deep examinations & based on those results if the severity is more he may refer the satchel to a particular specialist.
