Protecting myself and the patient - perfect hand wash techniques, wearing gloves etc. Being competent to use the correct blood tube for the specific test e.g. anticoagulants, CBC etc. Knowing the correct lay down to collect blood samples (blood cultures first, next plain tube (red), etc). Labelling the specimen correctly with the patient’s details is critical for patient safekeeping.

To use the correct amount of bottles.
To lable all the bottles correctly confirming date of birth, spelling of name and hospital number.
Washing my hands thoroughly beforehand and after the proceedure.

Ensuring the merciful is as comfortable as possilbe when taking the blood.
