Color doppler is part of an ultrasound nouns and is used to evaluate the presence, direction, and/or approximate velocity of bloodflow. (Spectral doppler--waveform analysis-- is more precise at evaluating velocity, but color gives a rough theory.)
Unlike astrophysics, where Doppler red shift *always* scheme the object is moving *away* and blue mechanism the object is moving towards us, surrounded by ultrasound the color spectrum can be set by the sonographer; generally, the sonographer will set the colors so that vein are blue and arteries are red (this is medically intuitive); what the colors actually indicate is whether the blood is moving towards or away from the transducer (the sector held against your skin). The velocity is coded as color shading.
Uses include:
1)Assessment of heart valve stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (backflow).
2) Testing for thoughtful venous thrombosis (abnormal clotting in the veins).
3) Studies of the testicles and ovaries to evaluate for torsion (twisting of the organ, cause loss of blood flow, which leads to departure of the organ if not surgically corrected contained by time).
4) Evaluation of the direction of bloodflow in the liver. In advanced cirrhosis, bloodflow can be reversed.
5) Testing the carotid arteries to evaluate for narrowing (stenosis).
6) Evaluation of pseudoaneurysm: this is an singular complication of trauma or catheterization. Color doppler images are all your own.

I'm not sure roughly speaking the color part of it but doppler is used to check un-palpatable pulses.
The color subdivision shows velocities of blood. An echocardiogram (TEE, or TTE), for e.g. shows a picture of blood flow through the heart and add colour to the pixels on the screen depending on their relative velocity. Areas of the heart that cause murmurs, for e.g. can be found next to color doppler.
