Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by a fewer in the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH). This enzyme is critical to metabolize the amino acid phenylalanine to the amino sour tyrosine. When PAH is deficient, phenylalanine accumulate and is converted into phenylketones, which are detected in the urine.

Left untreated, this condition can lead to problems with brain nouns, leading to progressive mental retardation and seizure. However, PKU is one of the few genetic diseases that can be controlled by diet. A diet low in phenylalanine and dignified in tyrosine can bring roughly speaking a nearly total cure.

Women affected by PKU must salary special attention to their diet if they wish to become pregnant, since dignified levels of phenylalanine within the uterine environment can cause severe defect and mental retardation in the child. However, women who declare an appropriate diet can have usual, healthy children.
