What biochemical test can differentiate shigella boydii and shigella flexneri without doing serological tests?

pls help. the test that we have done so far limited my unknown bacteria to s. flexneri and boydii. however we did not do serological tests.. how can i determine which species is it? tnxxx

Answer:
Well, from what I can tell, there are a couple biochemical tests that might help narrow down which organism that your working with...S.Boydii is never positive for the biochemical compound Raffinose, however, S.Flexneri has confidence ratings of 72-89% with Raffinose, in all but serotypes four and six. S.boydii has high percentages of serotypes that are positive for glycerol, whereas S.flexneri are not positive for glycerol in all but serotype 6. I think its going to be difficult given the number of serotypes (six for flexneri and 15 for boydii) to find a single biochemical test to differentiate them. You will probably have to narrow them down based on several reactions. Here's a link for a comparison chart on various reactions. Best of luck! :-)
