Answer:
Advair is a very important tool for asthma control. Your Albuterol inhaler is a rescue medication.

Advair is for people who use their rescue inhaler more than three or four times a week (total of three to four breathing treatments per week total). If you are using your rescue inhaler more than four times a week, it is generally understood that your asthma is not under control and that a long-acting control medication (like Advair or Symbicort) should be used too.

When my doctor put me on Advair, I had been coughing all the night before, almost vomited several times, and had a week of misery from asthma symptoms. I had a hard time saying more than a few words at a time without coughing. Stairs were a real challenge. I was walking like an old person. My chest hurt because of all the coughing. It was almost a week after I started taking Advair that my lungs were feeling good. I was in pretty bad shape when I went to my doctor. Before Advair, I was not on any medication.

If you don't like Advair, then you need to talk to your doctor about it. The alternative is Symbicort, which is the same idea with different drugs. I think that Symbicort is less expensive too.

An alternative to using long-acting medications is to do it the old fashioned way. Your doctor can put you on an inhaled steroid separately. For example: Asthmanex, Flovent, Pulmicort, Qvar, etc... There are many. Since your doctor put you on Advair, he/she thinks that you could benefit from an inhaled steroid and long-acting bronchodilator. It can be done with Albuterol or Combivent (Albuterol and Atrovent) and a separate inhaled steroid.

The bottom line is that you are afraid of or don't want to take your medication as prescribed by your doctor. Considering that asthma kills people, don't kid yourself into thinking that your asthma is doing better and that you don't need Advair anymore. If you are using your rescue inhaler more than four times a week, your asthma is not in control. It's that simple. When asthma is not in control, your medications get changed to put it in control. Please talk to your doctor about your asthma treatment plan.

I read a study about asthma recently. It seems that about three-quarters of people prescribed an inhaled steroid don't use it properly or at all. Inhaled steroids are extremely useful for long term asthma control. The people who don't take their medication are most of the asthma death statistics. People with asthma who take their medications properly rarely end-up in the hospital or die from poor asthma control.

Question number 8 is interesting. It sounds like you don't know how to use your Advair Diskus. It also sounds like you can operate your Albuterol inhaler. What I recommend is that you ask your doctor about changing Advair to using two regular inhalers. For example, if you took Albuterol four times a day and took an inhaled steroid like Qvar or Flovent from the same style of inhaler as your Albuterol twice a day, you would likely have better asthma control.
1-3 - probably once a day - almost every day when allergies were bad
4-5 - yes, singulair and flovent
6-7 - yes, I used it for about a year and along with antihistamines i have not needed advair OR my rescue inhaler for about 4 months now
8 - it just means don't breath through your nose at the same time that you are inhaling your dose - your breath is the only thing that moves the drug, if you breath through your nose you won't get the proper dose

Advair is a therapy drug. Over time there should be an improvement in the overall health of your lungs - it should improve your breathing long-term.
