stem cells are cell that have not but been written to be a specific cell. Be it bone, muscle, optical, whatever. In this event, science is hoping to program these unwritten cell to be whatever cell they need.
It is surrounded by this way, for example, that they hope to regrow someones spinal cord. i.e. Christopher Reeves
Stem cell can be coaxed to become any type of cell...new livers,trial brain cells,etc.

Basically research to sustain grow organs using your genes. For instance if your kidney fails, they can rob genes you saved form birth to regrow a brand new one I guess.
