Ultrasound Technicians?

What exactly are they and what do they do?

Answers:    I am not sure exactly what you are looking for here. Are you asking what an ultrasound technologist looks for in an OB ultrasound?

For a 20 week anatomy scan, where on earth I work, we document these things:

**cervical length, placenta, ammonic fluid levels
**measurements: 2 of the baby's skipper and 1 each of the belly and femur to get an estimated fetal age and immensity
**fetal organ survey - urinary bladder, 2 kidneys, stomach bubble, fetal cord insertion, 4 chambered heart, outflow tracts of the heart, diaphragm, aorta and aortic arch, nasal bone, both eye lenses, structures of the brain (posterior fossa, ventricle), the entire fetal spine in two different view or planes, entire lower and upper extremities on both arms/legs
***we document the fetal heart rate
***we document that you have a 3 vessel umbilical cord and do doppler wavelengths on the cord
***maternal gallbladder, as pregnant women hold a higher rate of gallstones
***of course, if the mother wishes, we try to determine the fetal sex

In a 1st trimester OB ultrasound, we on the whole make sure the infant is developing within the uterus (rather than a tubal pregnancy), document fetal number (singleton, twins, triplets), document fetal heartbeat, and determine fetal age. First trimester ultrasound is the best time to determine how far along a pregnancy is.

Or are you asking what an ultrasound technologist does, outside of OB ultrasounds?

Most nation do not realize that ultrasound is used for more than looking at babies! Ultrasound is used to visualize many things, but it cannot figurine air-filled structures, such as the intestines or lungs. We can and do image the thyroid, salivary glands, carotid arteries, breasts, heart, pancreas, aorta, vena cava, liver, gallbladder and adjectives bile duct, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, uterus, ovaries, testicles, prostate gland, palpable soft tissue masses feel anywhere on the body, large vessel of the arms and legs....did I miss anything? We also assist the radiologist with biopsies (thyroid, liver and breast), amniocentesis and paracentesis studies.
They get something done ultrasounds. An ultra-sound is an non-invasive imaging device that uses soundwaves to show the inner workings of the human body. Somewhat like an X-Ray, but they are better at showing soft tissue, and enjoy no side effects.

EDIT: Yes, exactly :) But they are used for a wider range of reason than just babies.
they bear ultrasounds
