If you are anemic, donating blood will worsen the anemia, so it's not a good idea.

People donate blood for themselves before surgery when significant blood loss is anticipated, but they have to have a decent red blood cell count in order to do so safely.

There are hemoglobin and hematocrit requirements even for autologous donations. If you are anemic and in need of a transfusion you will not meet these requirements.
