They are not as accurate. The farther you take from the center of the body, the less accurate they become. The reading can in actual fact be slightly lower than the arm. Same goes for the finger monitors. They are smaller amount accurate than the wrist which are even less accurate than the arm. We tested this out surrounded by class. Get an arm reading then 15min then get a wrist reading. Its with the sole purpose by about 2-3mmHg so I guess it depends how accurate you want to be.
We don't use them on our ambulances, but my father contained by law uses one. It seem to be fairly accurate when I estimate what I get next to a standard sphyg and steth. I am not sure what principal they use or if it is different from the regular upper arm automatics.
The reason we steal it on the arm is because it is in row with the heart; to be precise why you can take it on the leg, on the wrist, etc when a pt is lying down. Standing or sitting up routine you really should put it on the arm.
