Are surgeons desensitized to the actual gore?

Answer:
Desensitized? Heck they LOVE it! You should see the look on their faces after they go and get to crack open a chest within the ER.....
Not necessarily, in the context of surgery. Seeing internal organs within the course of an operation is nothing close to coming upon a traffic accident and witnessing mutliation and demise.

I used to work with a nonspecific surgeon who made an interesting comment during an abdominal surgery, as he was "running the bowel" (passing the intestines through his hand while checking for masses): "You know what really grosses me out? Eye surgery. Makes me want to puke." So you can see there's a personal perspective, too.
Hey, as long as it isn't MY gore......
Seriously, I never had a problem, but I be a country boy and a hunter, so maybe the animal experience give me a head start. And I agree next to this from the other post: penetrating eye injuries bequeath me a little bit of the willies. Thank honesty I can punt to ophthalmologists.
