Why do black men use different heart medication to white men?

On an episode of House a black man was given different heart medication to what a white man would receive. Apparently this medication be specially designed to work better for black men. I'm curious as to what difference exists between white and black men that they might use two different medications?

Answers:    Doctors would close to to know, too. I didn't see the show, so I don't know which medication you're talking more or less, but there are several significant differences contained by how blacks and whites respond to cardiovascular medications. That holds for men and women, as very well. But the drugs aren't designed that way. For instance, the use of hydralazine surrounded by afterload reduction for congestive heart bomb seems to work markedly well within blacks, according to recent studies, but the drug's been used for decades. Perhaps even more interesting is that CMS looks at the prescription of dependable drugs as markers of standard, and this isn't one of them, despite the fact that it's cheaper and works better than the alternative contained by selected patients.
In drug treatment studies, one of the major things to do is to check for "confounding variables" that might skew the results. Sometimes something unexpected resembling a racial difference pops up. That contained by itself is meaningless, but it does offer the hypothesis for following study, and that's the stage at which we find ourselves with some of these drugs. Stay tuned.
