Long Term Affects With Using Toprol XL And Other Beta Blockers?
Answer:
Toprol XL is an extended release version of Metoprolol. It's a B1 Selective adrenoreceptor blocker, meaning it is cardioselective. Basically since it's B1 selective it means that it usually does not interfere with b2 adrenoreceptors which are primarily in the lungs/bronchial system. Sometimes at very high dosages there can be some effect on B2 receptors.
As far as long term side effects are concerned, new evidence (2006) has shown that Beta Blockers have a higher risk for acquiring type 2 diabetes. It was actually downgraded to option #4 for treatment of hypertension because of this risk.
I honestly dont know what Toprol XL is but I take Propranolol which is one, for migraines. I am not positive if its this med or others I take for COPD and asthma, but one of them has made me sunlight sensitive and I get welts when I get sunburned.
As for other side effects, I havent noticed any and I have been taking it for 4 yrs now.
