Medical and Veterinary Students: If you could impart one peice of proposal to pre-meds... ?
If you could furnish one piece of advice to incoming first-year undergrads, what would it be? And why?
Thanks!
Answer:
I'd recommend them to calm down. Though the programs are competitive, they're not so competitive as to warrant the nonspecific level of anxiety. A student who have any business getting into medical school is going to capture into medical school. The stress associates put on themselves is unwarranted.
If I can be allowed a second bit of advice, it would be to treasure the courses surrounded by the humanities. The science courses are good preparation for medical conservatory but don't go much beyond that. The humanities will closing a lifetime and ultimately be more important to the immature doctor-in-the-making and to his patients.
I would advise them to appropriate an English class at the university instead of a community college because the verbal cubicle on the MCAT is difficult but being exposed to some writing reading classes help.
I personally own had my pre-professions advisor detail me that i did not have haphazard of getting into med school, i be furious and now refuse permission for to see her, but just explain to them that if their grades are not stellar their first yr, keep trying. Let them know the reality that it is very competitive, they a short time ago need to verbs to work hard as all right, and get give a hand when they need it. Biggest reprimand of freshman, they do not ask for help, myself included, I thought the professors would be judgmental if I asked for relieve.
Most importantly, tell them if they really want to run into the Med/Vet field, they should remain harassing and not let roads blocks within their way get in the way of the path. If you really want something you will find ways to obtain to it. I have hear stories of students who applied to med school for 4 yrs past they got within, and I have stories of student who hold a GPA of 3.9 MCAT of 25 who did not get within to the schools they applied here surrounded by US, so now are going to a institution in the Caribeans. Just do not consent to them get disheartened.
Also frequent freshmans come in as pre-med because of their parents, incite them to get some experience within the field to receive sure that this really what they want to do. Because after undergrad, things do not get any easier. The individual really have to stay motivated to get through the rough yrs.
