Why are you automatically put on antidepressants?

Feeling low, Fed up Doctors answer put you on anti depressaints ...

Answer:
Actually, this is a very good question.
I am a hospital consultant, and I am simply ALARMED by the number of patients that come to us for other reasons, but who have been prescribed antidepressants by their GPs. To make matters worse, a friend of mine tried to prescribe them for me after I had an accident and I was feeling low.
All this reveals:
1. Complete incompetence to make the diagnosis of "depression".
2. Complete incompetence to UNDERSTAND what depression is.
3. A complete mess: how in hell are GP's allowed to prescribe these drugs? Did you know UK is the only country in EU where GPs are allowed to do it?
4. Complete ignorance about the side-effects of antidepressants: this is why their patients get sent to me!
5. Not being able to differentiate between minor depression and major depression. They have no idea what the definitions are, they ignore the first one MUST NOT be treated, and they have no idea what the DSM-IV is (the diagnostic criteria for mental diseases that... UK is the only country in the EU that doesn't aknowledge them!.

A mess. A real mess.
because the nhs are crap and they look for the easiest way to get you out out their office thats why!! if anything they should prescribe antidepressants as a last alternative, the side effects aren't nice x
Because it is the easy way out for so called "over worked" "underpaid" doctors. £250,000 per year is not enough for them!!
Its to keep the lucrative pharmaceutical industry going

Fresh air and exercise are free and work much better
Its the easy way out for them, try seeing a psychologist and talking through it as the tablets wont work forever.
You're not but we do know how to assess for a level of depression that profits from use of medication as well as counseling; both are needed. But please be aware of the fact that living a substandard life secondary to untreated depression is no way to live..or die for that matter. Untreated depression remains one of our more deadly mental health problems and the stigma associated with use of medication seriously contributes to this. Do you ask this question about the antibiotic your doc prescribes for an infection? Of course not. Left untreated, depression often recurs and takes us to a new low. This is how our brain chemistry works for those of us with this illness. The irony is, the illness itself impedes our ability to see things clearly and make good decisions. Please listen to a doctor you trust and get a second opinion. Then follow doctors orders. Today I still can't believe the quality of life I enjoy simply because I had good people around with the right advice. I wish you well.
hi caz ...in my opinion and i have been told this by members of the uk health profession it is because it is easier less time consuming and therefore cheaper to deal with things this way than it is to offer real counselling and dietary advice. I know this from first hand experience when my other half has been suffering with depression it turns out because they were treating him for depression this actually made him worse, when in fact he had bereavment and abondonment issues going back 30 years. hope this helps.. and by the way the tablets are supposed to help with a chemical imbalance in the brain taking the tablets is supposed to level this out but it is your own ability to self heal and communicate with people which will ultimatley get you through. :-) good luck
Because we are all guinea pigs, lets face it, they have made so many drugs, they don't know what to do with them anymore.
I am suffering as a result as being used as a guinea pig, without my consent. I will never trust another doctor as long as I live. They tried to bump me off with there drugs, when I was putting in a serious complaint about their errors.
Do you have a clue whats in the tablets the doctor prescribes. Neither does the doctor. And the sooner we realise, the system is faulty, and that there are too many unprofessional doctors in the system the better. Remember they are comparing us with mice and other creatures, that do not breed like humans, nor can a human begin to survive if he/she ate a bar of soap, bits of cardboard and any other rubbish that these poor experimental creatures eat. Don't let them guinea pig you. Go to the health shop and get your vitamins and minerals etc. eat a healthy diet. Lots of vegetables and natural foods., Doctors do like to shut us up. Ask yourself, When did I last have my blood pressure taken by my doctor.
Did he/she asked me did I want to see a counsellor
Did he/she look in my eyes, mouth, ears or throat.
If the answer is no. I rest my case.
Sounds like a reasonable thing to do. What's wrong with it?
Because here in the US insurance comapnies actually pay physicians ( via an end of year bonus) to get as many patients in and out of their office as expeditiously as they possibly can. This makes it lucrative for your doc to write you a quick prescription and move right on to the next patient.
Antidepressants are handed out like candy! They are extremely popular. One of the reasons is that the pharmaceutical companies make it financially beneficial for doctors to prescribe their stuff. They regularly give physicians catered meals, expensive gifts and cash incentives. And antidepressants are their big sellers.
