Free time during residency in hospital?

I know that residents work with horrible schedules during residency, working about 80 hours a week. But on average, how many night shifts do they have? For some reason, I am picturing going like 3 days without sleep and not having time to do anything else. I don't think I would be able to think too well for the patient's well-being if I didn't get sleep for days at a time.

So...what is an example of an average schedule that residents work during a week? Thanks.

Answer:
A few years ago, every third night and perhaps all of every other or every third weekend was common. Now, in theory, residents are supposed to be limited to an average of 80 hours a week, though of course it'll be more some weeks. You do become more of a menace after a couple of sleepless nights, but depending on the residency, with luck, you can get in catnaps. It's still peculiar, though, that the government regulates the hours of OTR truck drivers, but residents don't have the restriction.
