Why cant you eat grapefruit while taking valium ?

it has that very specific warning label on it. why ? what would happen?

Answer:
You need to avoid eating grapefruit and/or its juice because it doesn't necessarily counteract your drug but has a tendency to increase the amount of certain medications (Valium included) in your bloodstream. It interrupts enzymes that normally metabolizes drugs in your digestive system. Not only can it increase the level of Valium introduced in your bloodstream but it can increase the risk of serious side effects.

Avoid grapefruit and dietary supplements that contain grapefruit bioflavonoids (check the ingredients). Also, avoid tangelos, a hybrid grapefruit, and Seville oranges, a type of bitter orange often used to make marmalade and compotes. They tend to have similar effects. If you love your muffins and jam in the morning, please check the ingredients of your jam, marmalade, or compote.
it counteracts the effect of the valium-it's something to do with enzymes and acidy type thingies (I know not technical)
Certain enzymes in grapefruit affect the speed of absorption of medication in the intestines, causing the effects to vary wildly. The usual impact is that the medication will act as though it is a much stronger dosage, since the body absorbs it much faster than usual.
Right. It's not dangerous. Juts renders the Valium ineffectual. Grapefruit has that affect on several meds.
Take a tablet of valium and drink a glass of grape juice. Nothing happens.
Wine is not advised as it increases the sedation of valium.
Valium is broken down by a specific kind of chemical (enzyme) system in the liver. This chemical system is called the cytochrome P450 system.

Certain chemicals can speed up or slow down this system. One of these chemicals is found in grapefruit. I forget what happens exactly, but I *think* that grapefruit slows down this system that breaks down valium. Because of this, valium could build up in your system faster than it should and would be unsafe.
It effects the rate that the valium is absorbed into the bloodstream. Do yourself a favor and follow the warning label.
