So i was reading a book and it talked about salvia divinorum and was wondering if its dangerous...?
Answer:
Physically dangerous? Probably not. It's non-toxic and non-lethal. Can you unintentionally hurt yourself while using it? Absolutely.
The plant has been found to be non-toxic and no amount has been found to be damaging to tissue or lethal. Tests on mice show that the active chemical, Salvinorin A, did not cause damage in copious amounts many times proportionally greater than what humans would ever consume through smoking, chewing, etc... (Heck, a human would probably be unconscious and unable to overdose even if it were possible-- this is potent stuff!) I'd say this stuff is as safe as the stuff in your salad.
Long term effects are unknown. The Mazatecs in Oaxaca, Mexico seem fine though... Are there flashbacks? Also unknown. It's just not widely used enough or researched enough to know...
When you smoke it, it can produce visions, fractal images, unconsciousness, laughter, etc. Generally, people lose all self-awareness when a breakthrough has been reached and learn something about themselves in the process... though everybody's experiences are different.
It's a hallucinogen, but only lasts for a short amount of time... like 5-10 minutes when smoked. 2 hours when chewed, but with far less "breakthrough" impact.
So. I don't think Salvia Divinorum is dangerous unless you smoke it alone... Then you're liable to kill yourself doing something you're not aware you're doing, and that's just not cool. Staring at the sun, trying to merge with the cement floor, dive into the grass, jump out a 4-story window, etc is all possible with this. HAVE A SITTER.
Salvia divinorum, also known as Diviner's Sage, Magic Mint, MarĂa Pastora, Sage of the Seers, or simply Salvia (although the genus name is shared among many plants), is a powerful psychoactive plant, a member of the sage genus and the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It has long been used as an entheogen by the indigenous Mazatec shamans for healing during spirit journeys. The plant is found in isolated, shaded and moist plots in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is thought to be a cultigen.
The Latin name Salvia divinorum literally translates to "sage of the seers". The genus name Salvia is derived from the Latin salvare, meaning "to heal" or "to save".
The primary psychoactive constituent is a diterpenoid known as salvinorin A.
If Salvia is smoked the main effects are experienced quickly. The most intense 'peak' is reached within a minute or so and lasts for about 1-5 minutes, followed by a gradual tapering back. At 5-10 minutes, less intense yet still appreciable effects typically persist, but giving way to a returning sense of the everyday and familiar until back to recognizable baseline after about 15 to 20 minutes
Chewing the leaf makes the effects come on more slowly, over a period of 10 to 20 minutes, the experience then lasting from another 30 minutes up to one and a half hours
"S" - Subtle effects
"A" - Altered perception
"L" - Light visionary state
"V" - Vivid visionary state
"I" - Immaterial existence
"A" - Amnesic effects.
'SALVIA' scale, using the initial letters to categorise six levels of experience broadly by increasing relative intensities.
