Could an ultrasound be wrong?

i have had 2 ultrasound scans in the 1st trimester and they hav both pretty much agreed with each other within a week of how far gone i am.is it possible that they could be as much as 4-5 weeks out?

Answer:
By seeing the development of the fetus and knowing your last menstuation, no, it wouldn't be off by so many weeks.
I think not. Docs are usually careful about these things. lol
YES ultrasounds can be wrong

first i had a scan they said it was twins. came back an hour later and said actually we found another one it must have been hiding! grrrr so now im having triplets

i dont think date wise they are that far off but i know of people that its been maybe a couple of weeks out with the date but ive never heard of anyone being 4 to 5 weeks off with the date.
I really don't think it could be wrong by that many weeks my wife and I have 4 children and they were right on every time.
put it this way... 1 week before i had my son the scan supposedly revealed i was carrying a very small baby weighing about 5 pounds in weight...one week later I gave birth to a 7 pounder..so they got that wrong and caused me UN-necessary worry.
The images produced by the sound waves can't be wrong. The interpretation of the imgae can be.
Due dates are calculated on certain measurements and they're pretty spot on. I'd be surprised if they were that far out.
i dont think your ultra sound can be that far wrong, when i went for my scans and the date the midwife gave me in the clinic were exactly the same, could you try and work it out yourself?
Not likely at all. The scan is the most accurate gestation measuring tool. The other one is by going by the first date of your last period. Even then it's incredibly unlikely that the dates between these two could be more than 2-3weeks.

What makes you think it's wrong? If you have any further concerns, please speak to your midwife and/or your/a sonographer!
