HPV is contracted by skin contact and more than 80% of women will be infected at some point in life span...most will never even know it. The body usually clears the infection up on its own but sometimes it can cause lesion that left untreated will progress to cancer. Its not unusual at all for a women to hold an abnormal pap due to hpv. Once diagnosed a colposcopy ( a pap below a microscope) and a biopsy are done to see the extent of the infection. The doctor may say to depart it alone and have another pap within six months or to do a procedure such as cryosurgery to removed the abnormalities. It most commonly will not effect a womans chances to enjoy children. Its important to attain it treated but its not definite that will turn to cancer.
