Eww...The reason it's messy is because she is bleeding! Maybe another defence she doesn't want to have sex next to you while on her period is because it would be quality of embarrasing...I think it would be embarrasing anyway, put yourself within her shoes, your having sex, and your bleeding adjectives over the place.
