A surprising number of people suffer fom Obstructive Sleep Apnea. They tend to be overweight and sleep on their backs. When they sleep, the muscles of the throat collapse, preventing the smooth passage of air. They snore, and in worse cases gasp for breath (in their sleep). The usual remedy is to supply air under pressure, monitored to suit the patient, through a mask which fits over the nose.
A partial obstruction of your upper airway makes you snore. There are lots of causes. The most common are being overweight, or alcohol.
