What cause a hightened sense of smell?

i keep smelling things that are not close by to me, or when i try and track the smell down its gone? what could impose this?

when my kidney's started to backfire I had a heightened sense of smell and audible range but a lessened sense of taste( everything tasted metallic) .So it could be a relocate happening inside of you which could incentive this heightened sense of smell. This may not necessarily be a bad entry but I would consult a doctor right away.
