What could it be if you have a knot on the side of your upper neck, right below the jaw area and further back?

My friend's daughter has a knot on her neck and it's sore and bothering her. They are concerned and worried, but it is the weekend and the doctor isn't available. What could it be?

Answer:
I had a knot in the exact same spot..and i had a sore throat too..she may have mononucleosis because it toke me 4 different doctors to get a proper diagnoses, but it ended up i have a really bad case of mono because my lymph's were so swollen. Take her into a walk-in clinic if you can because a blood test will take another 2-3 days. Especially if they tell her that she has strep throat or something, ask about mono. Hope she feels better!
possible inflammed lymphnodes, check with your doc and get some antibiotics.
It could be a swollen lymph node from an infection or it could be an abscessed tooth, does she have a place in her mouth near this area that is draining pus? Have her take some ibuprofen and call doctor first thing on Mon, or take her to Youth Care if you are truly concerned.
that is good if it is moveable and not attached to anything. It is probably a swollen lymph node. Sounds like she needs some antibiotics
