Unprescribed antibiotics made me sick, should I tell the doctor?

I have a throat infection (I think bacterial in nature) but I haven't been to the MD. I started taking a very general antibiotic but it was not prescribed for me. Rather than helping, it made me extremely nauseous over the past couple of days. The infection has gotten really bad and I have to see someone.

The doctor asked me to fill out paperwork and on the paperwork, it asks if I have taken any medication in the past week. I have, but I wasn't supposed to be taking them. Should I mention this to the doctor or should I leave it out? It was just an antibiotic, so isn't really dangerous and I don't have any allergies to them. This was just a side effect. Thanks.

Answer:
You should ALWAYS! be honest with your doctor. And if possible know the name of the antibiotic. It could have been the wrong medicine to help your problem. Which really isnt huge, it just didnt help you. Likewise the medicine itself probably didnt make you worse, your problem just got worse bc you werent treating it.
Point is, always be honest with your doc. You probably will get lectured bc with some medicines it is dangerous to take them without actually being prescribed.
You are protected by patient-doctor privledge, so if or anyone else is ever taking illegal or abusive drugs, you should report that to the doc as well. Some medicines can cause adverse reactions with other medications or any recreational drugs you may be taking.
yes, and be prepared to get lectured.
You definitely should whether or not you want to be lectured about it. If you don't tell the doctor, s/he's not going to understand why something is wrong and may just prescribe the wrong medicine to you. Different drugs could also interact with each other and cause you more trouble if the doctor doesn't know about it. Better to be safe than sorry.
Absolutely! You may be allergic to that particular drug and/or the antibiotic may not even attack your infecting organism.

Unprescribed and improper use of antibiotics are the major reason that we are now faced with drug-resistant organisms.

Get to your MD and tell him what happened and let him do his job.
Yes you should list it, and no, you shouldn't take a unprescribed drug EVER again, because the nausea could be a side effect or it could be your body's way of saying that you are allergic, or that it isn't working or making it worse. Please do not do that again.

Get to your doctor and talk with him/her about what is going on and let them help you. That is their job.
Yes, and never take medicine that is not prescribed to you. All medicine has an expiration date. Do you know if the antibiotic you took was still good?

And take all the medicine that is prescribed to you. If you don't take it all, you may not kill off all of the infection. That means it can come back stronger and not be effected by that medicine. That is what causes drug-resistant diseases, like that guy with TB who was in the news and is now in quarantine.
Just list the antibiotic on the form and tell him that a friend had some and you took them.If he (She) makes a fuss tell them just to examine you and do their job... The doctor isn't your parent.

And just to dispel some myths...
" the major reason that we are now faced with drug-resistant organisms."
Its called evolution...Just the presence of antibiotics in time nature itself will cause a new strain of virus to arise...It is the was all life forms (Even malicious ones) survive...

And antibiotics don't go bad on the day that is printed on the bottle. The US military researched the matter and found that most "cillins" could be stored properly in solid form (Away from air, light, and heat.) for up to two years without loss in potency...Of course suspensions expired in rather short periods of time...

Fish antibiotics (Which is what I use.) routinely have a year and half "Life" printed on the bottles.

Oh and the throat infection might just be something that isn't responsive to antibiotic...The doctor might have to run a few tests to determine what it really is..
