Answer:
Food substances:
Pomegranate juice, garlic, grapefruit juice, oily fish (mackeral, sardines, skippers, sild, fresh tuna, salmon), walnuts, almonds, oat bran, oatmeal, green tea, pulses, celery, advocado, extra virgin olive oil.

Health supplements:
gum guggul, globe artichoke extract, Niacin (a B Vitamin), fish oil capsules, soy lecithin, psyllium husk powder, flax seed powder.

Your Grandma would have to avoid grapefruit juice if she is on cholesterol lowering medicine or certain medication. The same applies to garlic if she is on blood thinning medication.

Niacin (B Vitamin) is best taken as part of a Vitamin B Complex. it can sometimes cause facial flushing when it is first taken but this is nothing to be alarmed about. Plus your Grandma would have to seek medical advice before taking it if she is on insulin. It is supposed to be very effective in lowering cholesterol, as effective as over the counter anti-cholesterol drugs but without the nasty side effects.

If your Grandma is on medication it is always best for her to check with a pharmacist first before taking any herbal supplements because of drug-herb ineractions that can occur with some drug and herb combinations..

Hope this helps.
Best wishes for your Grandma.
if tv has taught me anything: eat CHEERIOS!
CHERIOES!!!!!!!!...
nuts, like almonds help lower cholesterol, so does fiber. she needs to stay away from foods with high cholesterol like a lot of seafoods, if she eats them, fried foods and such, yea pretty much eat more whole grains which help lower cholesterol and maybe have her drink a glass of red wine a day, it helps thin out the blood. i hope i helped at least a little. hope your gramma will be alright.
Sorry, first thing to say is diet and exercise. Low fat diet (3 F's - fatty food, fried food, fast food - should be avoided) and aerobic exercise of more than 3 hours per week and more than 15-20 minutes nonstopped are both important.

Over the counter stuff that may help reduce cholesterol include:

* Metamucil - study back in 70's shows Metamucil powder twice a day may reduce cholesterol up to 10%;
* Fish oil - multiple studies suggests that fish oil at least 3-4 tabs a day will reduce bad cholesterol and make it less harmful, but you have to take at least 3-4 tabs per day; also deep sea fishes are thought to be helpful because they eat planktons; farm raised fishs are not useful in lowering cholesterol;
* Natural Fiber - such as Grains (ie cereal, Cheerios), Vegetables (spinach, broccoli) may also help reduce cholesterol;
* Garlic - natural garlic may help; save yourself money by buying natural garlic; garlic pills probably are waste of money

Also, please go see your doctor and get some lab done. The earlier high cholesterol is controlled, the less it will build up, that also means that the less likely you will have heart attack and stroke when you are older.
oatmeal, and cheerios cereal work. stop eating junk food and salty foods
