What makes us yawn, and why is it that when you see someone else yawn, you always end up yawning yourself?
Answer:
It is lack of oxygen in your body so you yawn to get that little more you need also when someone else yawn's you follow suit as your body feel's they are stealing your oxygen!
i hve no idea why we yawn, but when someone else yawns it always does start you off yawning too, same as when your doing the washing up you always get an itchy nose.
don't know the answer to that - but animals do it as well !
Yawning is contagious!
but i dont know why

I think in more primitive times if everyone fell asleep around the same time it was better so if one person was tired and yawned the others would get tired to!
Yawning is due to lack of oxygen.
When you yawn, you take in a big breath.
As for yawning when anyone else does...I have no idea...but I'm yawning just thinking about it lol!!
yoru body isnt getting enough oxygen is what my dad told me when i asked him a long time ago. idk if hes right though
Who knows? It's just a freak of nature. You can yawn if someone on the phone yawns. Or on TV. It just does.
when ever you are sleepy and tired you always yawn and if you see some one else yawning then u just do it also
A yawn is an expression of tiredness and people dont like to show it thats until someone else yawns and it makes them yawn.
what makes me .... *Yawn* .. yawn is seeing the same questions ..... *Yawn* ... repeated over and over again on ByeDr.com !!
i guess cuz when someone yawns it makes you think about yawning so u yawn. i hate it when that happens to me. . ......
the same reason dog sniff each others ***..you are doing just what looks good..your mind does not know but a message is being sent to the brain...yawn...now lets go sniff some ***..if i eat my snots.would you then eat your snot..it is all in your head....
yawning is a neurological instinct. only humans and monkeys do it. it starts when we are in the womb and continues until we die. it is also very contagious. we automatically do it when we see somebody else do it. it's a myth that we do it when we are tired and yawn to get more oxygen into our systoms.
dee.. u r so right about the itchy nose and washing up.. i wondered that myself! it happens all the time and then i scratch it with my gloves on and it gets even itchier lol
i think we yawn because we're getting oxygen to the brain.
New research (in this weeks New Scientist) thinks that it is actually to cool the brain to make us more alert.
Apparently they took some volunteers, split them into four groups, to 1) breath strictly orally 2) breath strictly nasally 3) orally while wearing a nose plug or 4) just breathe normally.
Half the people breathing normally or through their mouths yawned while watching other people yawn, while none of those told to breathe through their noses yawned. The researchers also found that subjects who held a cold pack to their forehead did not catch yawns from the film, while those who held a warm or room-temperature pack yawned normally. The idea being that if you breathe through your nose it cools the air and if you have a cold pack on your head, both help to cool the brain. The thought is that it helps brain function.
From the article : "Not only that, brain-cooling explains why you can "catch" a yawn, says Gordon Gallup. "We think contagious yawning is triggered by empathic mechanisms which function to maintain group vigilance." In other words, yawn-catching evolved to help raise the attentiveness of the whole group."
It increases the amount of oxygen in the body. I heard a theory that we yawn when we someone else yawning, because subconsciously we are worried that the person yawning is using up oxygen for a specific reason, so we yawn too. Like jumping on the bandwagon really. Not sure if that holds water though.
Well yawning is the lack of oxygen in your blood so you breathe in deeply to get a more oxygen into you lungs thererfore incresing the level in you blood. Simple!
Now why is it contagious, I am not sure if this idea has been proved scientifically. If you think back to when we were cavemen there were many types of predators which would hunt man and use them for food. Now think about why you would want more oxygen in your blood, for energy. What could energy be used for say running away from a predator as there was no other real way for man to require lots of energy. If a caveman had seen a potential enemy they would need as much energy as possible ready to run like hell. If someone else yawned other people would also yawn because it symbolises danger is near. The cavemen that yawned when someone else yawned would survive and reproduce whereas the ones that didn't yawn could have got killed therefore their dna was not passed on. Eventually everyone is a descendant from an automtic yawning caveman.
Although we have no predators now so we don't need to yawn we still do it as it will take a long time to de evolve.
