I have panic attacks for years. When i'd have enough I go to a therapist, and inside a few weeks I was done. That be in 1993 and I haven't have one since.

Finally we worked on an "emergency" breathing technique that have never failed to prevent anxiety from turning into hysterics. At the first sign of worrisome anxiety (like getting on an airplane):
1. Inhale, making it last to the count of 4
2. Hold it to the count of 4
3. Exhale making it end to the count of 4
4. Wait for the count of 4
Repeat!
By controlling your breathing you make it much harder for your body to uphold the state of false panic.
