He was 6' 8" when he was about 13 yrs. old and Dale Brown (LSU coach) discovered him on a military base in Germany (his father was an officer). Brown mistook him for a soldier. Obviously, he kept in touch with this prospect through highschool and this led to him choosing LSU for his college career.
His freshman year there were 3 future NBA 1st round draft choices on the team (Shaq, Stanley Roberts and Chris Jackson [later Mahmoud Abdul Rauf] - Shaq was the 1st overall pick in 1992 by Orlando, and Jackson was the 3rd overall pick in 1990 by Denver), but the team still floundered in the NCAAs.
