How do I go about getting a tax ID number for a fundraiser and do I have to register with the state of MI??

My dad was diagnosed with stage 3 gall bladder cancer and unfortunately it has spread to the bone. This procedure he needs will cost over 200,000. and insurance will only pay so much so I am trying to set up and fundraiser/benefit to help with the costs of his treatments. I have tons of great ideas but I need to make sure that I am following whatever guidelines the state of MI has set. I have to set up and bank account with a tax ID number. I also need this number to give to companies who I have donating large amounts. Any help would be amazing!! I have read and read and I can't seem to find my answers anywhere. Please help me.

I believe you will be able to use your SSN for your tax ID number unless you set up a separate organization through the State of Michigan.
I was able to get a tax id # over the phone by calling the irs
call the irs. good luck
Go to http://www.irs.gov and download the SS-1 form to request a new tax ID number. Print it out, fill in the name of your fundraising organization and fax it back to the IRS.

You'll get a fax back with your new tax ID number and you can use that temporarily to set up a bank account.

In Michigan, you might need a sales and use tax number or to regisetr as a charitable organization so donations would be tax-deductible. Probably not, but check with the Dept of Revenue website.
