Why do I feel so much anxiety when I wake up in the morning?

I am bipolar and have anxiety anyway, but it seems like it is worst when I wake up in the morning

Answer:
It's possibly got something to do with dreaming. Dreaming itself is not a restful activity. Dreaming is called 'paradoxical sleep' because brain wave patterns are similar to those of the brain when completely awake.

Dreaming is a state of arousal.

As far as much of your brain is concerned, your dream is real. So adrenaline and other stress hormones in your system will be active in the body.

This is a double edged sword, because over-dreaming, as well as using up these hormones and energy, is actually making it harder for the body to make more. As you try to flush out the incomplete emotions, you spend more time in REM sleep, and therefore less time in deep sleep, when your body should be recuperating in preparation for producing these hormones for the next day.

So if you are over-dreaming you're not resting but flooding your system with adrenaline and other stress hormones. If most of your sleep consists of dreams, your body and mind will begin to feel very tired during the day. Depressed people often report that the worst time of day is first thing in the morning.

Sometimes a depressed person may start waking up early in the morning and not be able to get back to sleep. This may be a way of the body trying to cut down on over-dreaming in order to try and lift depression.

This depletion is also why depressed people often feel at their worst first thing in the morning.

As the day progresses, their hormones replenish themselves and their energy levels increase, and they are better able to motivate themselves.
Your defenses are down, and maybe dreams-nightmares also. Are you taking meds? Talk to your doctor, maybe change the time you take your meds or something.
Try relaxation exercises.
Pray. Getting closer to Jesus has really helped my anxiety, because He loves me no matter what, and God knows what He is doing. I learn to trust more and more and the anxiety gets better. When I get anxious, I can pray and it helps.
I am in the process of quitting my anxiety meds. Was on a half dose for a year and a quarter dose for the last three months. It is still hard sometimes. But life is never easy for anyone, we are here to learn, not to take it easy!
I'll pray for you. Live well, do good and love deep. Forgive others-and yourself-that helps a lot.
Your medications may need to be adjusted, see your doctor, and look into support groups.
Probably anxious about facing the day. Is there anything you can do to make the day feel more managable? Maybe if you write down things on a calendar.

What things do you do to relax? Meditate or a little exercise?

I am taking my BP teen to a hypnotherapist to help him be able to manage his own anxiety better.

There are support groups for BP adults and teens at Yahoo! groups. Do a search there. If you talk to others your age online and ask how they manage anxiety, I'll bet you could get some advice.

Oh...are you taking meds? My son's anxiety is worse in the evenings, so he takes more meds then (Seroquel) than in the morning. You could ask your psychiatrist, or whoever is doing your meds, about changing your morning meds.

Good luck! I hope you feel better soon.
I think i might have an answer.. But first a question. What are you looking forward too? I have anxiety but have meds. this only masks of what is going on.. First find out what subconsious things that you have around you that are making you feel the way you do.. What do i mean? The things before belief before anything.. The internal anchor "feeling or vision, memories" that makes you feel anxious. You might not know what it is but search it out through meditation and self discovery or Neuro Linguistic Programming AKA NLP VERY POWERFUL .. make positive anchors " in your mind to remove the negitive ones and put in the "positive anchors" This comes before any belief, religion or god... The sun is going rise tommorrow and I am happy.. The Sun was also here before anything else.. It is the map of the human brain that is what I found is the best medicine, and finding out before all things that we call "reality" What was there? ___________ there is no right or wrong answer... My point we have the power to "choose what we think about and how long" we are our own worst enemy and we need to control it. Check out some NLP and you will thank me .It and me Changed my Life. I think about happiness and distort negitive events and learn from them....
Do something can make you absorbed in with. I have feel it too but I think it is because dreams. We feel anxiety because we dream gorgeous dreams but in reality we have problems.

Good luck, my friend.
