What do anti-depressants do for you?
Answer:
Hi Hun Great question and how brave of you to ask but its fantastic that you asked well this is the key..Now anti-depressants should be your last option i always stress this I'm telling you from experience!! Now I've sampled a dose of St Johns wort and it really works wonders and has NO!! side affects. So take those instead they make you feel "normal"(how you originally was acting before you became sad) by increasing the serotonin level in your body
Now artificially made anti depressants totally diminish your sex drive so your wont have a sex drive.
I'd say and know that st johns wort is your best option.
Good luck.
ive' had friends on those. My gosh. They look so high...lol's that should really be a last measure. It's like ur not urself. It's like sombody just came and put yourbody on auto pilate.good luck....chear up! :)
I'm on Lexapro and I am considerably less depressed. They don't make you feel happy but they keep you from feeling suicidal. The side effects I have aren't severe, I sometimes am irritable and jumpy and when I first started it I had nightmares every night but they're not as frequent now. My sister also took Lexapro but as in some cases, it made her more suicidal.
Also some things that I used to find horrific are now funny to me. They've sort of dulled my senses and I'm not squeamish now about things I used to be.
I take Zoloft and I think it works great. I used to take Xanax and it made me feel like I was on auto pilot zombie mode so I switched and I feel back to my normal self again, I feel so light and carefree again! I think it all depends on the person, talk to your doctor and tell him/her exactly what your experiencing and they will work with you to find what medication is best for you, sometimes you have to try a few before finding the right one, just be patient.
Personally, I think they are over-prescribed.
Anti-depressant drugs have the same effectiveness rate is talk therapy. Some scientists even theorize they're mostly just placebo.
Side effects that are frequently reported include feeling like a zombie, weight gain, loss of labido, tiredness, and withdrawl when coming off the medication.
And then when you consider that 85% of depressive episodes end naturally within 6 months, it seems that anti-depressants are no where near as useful as doctors tell you they are.
That said, if you are feeling suicidal, if your depression has not relented, or if therapy is not working, try the anti-depressants out. There is a place for them, certainly. And they have saved some people's lives.
But I honestly think doctors are way too quick to shove drugs down people's throats.
I experience depressive bouts (possibly as a result of mild bipolar), and I deal with it homeopathically, through excersize, diet, and having a support system.
And doing that hasn't just lessened my depression (in duration, frequency, and intensity), but it has helped me grow as a person.
Only you can really answer this, though. Just think well about it.
P.S. Someone above suggested St. John's Wort. I haven't tried it, but I do hear from many people that it works well at taking the edge off depression.
I haven't had any side effects. I no longer stay in my room or cry for no reason.
When you're suffering from depression, anti-depressant are suppose to make you suffer less, by dissipating the depression enough so you can live healthy and get other forms of help.
They work by modulating neurotransmitters in your brain, which are believed to effect your moods.
There are typical side effects for all anti-depressants that usually last up to 2 weeks and are usually bearable. There is a popular group of anti-depressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors; where wait gain and loss of sexual appetetite are common long term side effects. There are other types of anti-depressants available that do not come with these side effects and work differently than SSRI's
You should do research and talk to your Dr. to find out what will work best for your condition.
I personally take Wellbutrin (budeprion xl) and it's worked very well for me.
Good luck
All they do is mask the symtoms and make it harder to get to the EMOTION that is casusing the depression which is usually anger turned inward.
