What does in mental illness a duel diagnose mean?
Answer:
Dual diagnosis is defined by the presence of both mental health disorders and substance abuse disorders (alcohol and/or drug dependence or abuse). There are a variety of different mental health disorders that can be associated with substance use and labeled dual diagnosis. Some of these disorders include: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anti-social personality disorder, narcissistic personality, and depression. Depending on what disorder is present, the symptoms of a dual diagnosis patient can be different. To recover fully, the person needs treatment for both problems.

I suspect it means they couldn't figure out what you have , so they made two guesses
Oh, I had a dual diagnosis. Mine was depression and alcoholism. Obsessive/compulsive disorder may have been thrown in there, too. You know what they say about depression--it's anger turned inward.
Duel diagnosis is when you are diagnosed with 2 types of mental illness at the same time.
That means that the person has more than one mental problem such as ADHD Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Deficit for example !!
It means Ron that you are screwed!
I have been around the block for a lot of years. In the real old days dual diagnosis use to mean mental illness + mental retardation. In recent years dual diagnosis typically means you have been diagnosed with a mental illness and also diagnosed with a chemical dependence. Other terms that mean the same thing are co-occurring disorders (the most accurate and most accepted term). MICA is also used in the northeastern part of the country - MICA = Mentally ill Chemical Abuse.
Again in the old days if you had a co-occurring disorder the treatment providers offer sequential treatment. Treatment providers would make you go to substance abuse treatment and be chemical free for six months before they would treat for mental illness. That was very unsuccessful. That led to parallel treatment where you would go to a mental health treatment provider and also a substance abuse treatment provider at the same time. A better approach but often duplicated treatment and gave conflicting treatment messages. We are moving into a period where integrated treatment is being offered. The individual see a treatment provider who is trained in both mental illness and substance abuse. The therapist and client work on both issues at the same time. This often gets the best results.
A duel diagnosis means that there are two problems evident, such as psychosis and drug addiction or depression and anxiety. This term is used alot when someone with a learning disability also has a mental health illness. It can also be used when someone has a number of different menatl health illness', such as personality disorders, psychotic symptoms, and mood elation.
Hope this clears things up!
