They used to say it was unresponsive mothers called "refrigerator mothers". Lately the MMR vaccine has gotten lots of press, but that has been ruled out by careful studies. I'm in the psychology field and I can tell you that it is not known at this time. Some of the most promising theories are based on genetics and environmental toxins. Here is a good overview article:

Almost all autistic kids have someone in the family that has autistic characteristics.
There is definitely a genetic predisposition to it. My son has Aspergers and I think that also has to do with the fact that he had a traumatic birth.
autism is diagnosed more often. It's not that there are more kids getting it.
People who had it really bad were labeled autistic. Now there is a wide spectrum of autism ranging from severe to minor.
Doctors are under pressure to tell demanding and doctor-shopping parents why their kid behaves differently than other kids, and to get a pill for it.
The real tragedy facing our children is abortion.
There's the thimerasol theory- that's mercury in vaccines.
There's the MMR theory- that is, live vaccine measles congregate in the gut of the child with autism
There's the testosterone theory- that is, the pregnant mother has high levels of testosterone during pregnancy
There's the genetic theory- it runs in the family
There's the rough pregnancy/birth theory
There's the DPT theory- it's caused by the DPT vaccine
There's the environmental factors theory- no clue, just something in the environment that causes it
Most recently (and most ridiculous) the tv watching theory- tv watching causes autism
Lots of theories, no answers. My personal opinion- a genetic predisposition triggered off by vaccines/mercury in MOST cases. I think when we start finding answers, there will start to be different types of autism diagnosed- Thimerasol Autism, Testosterone Autism, Genetic Autism...
