Answer:
I have hear about this study but haven't read up on it all the same.
My dad has Alzheimer's and his brain is atrophied. It's smaller. I don't believe contained by my heart that the memories are there. He's have a massive die-off of brain cells. The connections between cell can regenerate, but the cells themselves, once departed, don't come back to existence, and we can't grow new ones (hence the interest contained by stem cells, which CAN form new neurons grow).
If it's purely the connections between neurons that are gone, yes, that can be fixed. But a dead neuron? I don't guess so.
The biggest problem here is the ancient question of how and where on earth our memories are stored. If you are metaphysical and you believe the memories/personality are reside in your soul, which is etheric and not portion of your physical body (although it inhabits it) then obviously all the memories are still at hand.
If you are very proven then you believe memories and opinion of yourself are 100% physical in spirit. In that case, any mischief to the parts of the brain that hold memory is permanent.
It is fundamentally difficult to retrieve memories if the brain is physically damaged contained by a way to affect memory retrieval. Although contained by the future at hand may be advances that will allow more effectual repair of damaged mechanism. This may be possible through nanotechnology or other improved medical procedures.
As for doing very well memory in an undamaged brain here are a few things one can do such as:
1. Associate a memory with something uncharacteristic or unusual, we tend to remember unusual things more than we remember the mundane.
2. Use all of your senses to remember something. What did the event smell approaching, taste resembling, feel resembling. Engage your senses to get a better overall picture.
3. Allow your memories to come to you softly. When we consciously stress over a memory we may in actuality reduce the haphazard of that memory being retrieved.
Here is an article explaining some ways to restore memory:
