If I continue to deny the need to take anti-depressants, will I end up having a mental disorder?
I just don't want to be dependent on meds for this. What should I do?
Answer:
Hi! I am sorry, going through a divorce is not easy, this works, what you need to do is depend on God for everything, your whole life will change, all you have to do is ask Jesus to forgive you for everything, then invite Him into your heart. He will fill you up with His love and more.Jesus loves you
meds dont usually work... i know. bad side effects too
no meds
No, you will not, necessarily.
Before there were these medications, people coped...some didn't, of course.
The anti-depressants can help you over a tough spot. You don't have to be dependent on them. It is my understanding that these drugs are not habit forming.
Also, I have been told that you have to give the medication time...however, you should be evaluated by a psychiatrist, he or she will know best what works and what doesn't.
Cognitive Behavior therapy can help.
You must realize that we don't choose the hands we are dealt. There is nothing wrong with having to be on such medication.
I think what you should do is see a professional Counselor/Therapist at your local Counseling Center. They have Psychiatrists on staff also, who can diagnose and prescribe what you need. You will be better off for it. You don't have to live a miserable life.
my antidepressant works great. sometimes you may think they aren't doing anything but when something happens or a tragedy occurs you are able to handle it better, I understand not wanting to get hooked on them, but if they work for you its something you and your doctor have to discuss,
I know what you mean. The N.P. probably knows what she is talking about. Why not try Zoloft or another medication? There is no shame in it. It is a chemical thing that you can't help and have no control over it. If it was high blood pressure instead of depression, then would you feel differently about the medication?
I hate having to take blood pressure medication, but it is hereditary and I cannot avoid the fact that I have it. The other alternative is to not take it, be miserable, have headaches, possibly die, or worse...stroke out and be a vegetable where my family and friends are forced to take care of me. I take the dang blood pressure pill.
Give the N.P. the benefit of the doubt. Try the medication for about 6 months. Increase the quality of your life. It is what it is. Good luck.
NO!
Cry when you feel like it and let people know when you are ticked off- speak up and don't hold stuff in.
Alway be ready for a hug.
You need to see a psychiatrist. A nurse practitioner is not qualified to diagnose clinical depression vs bipolar disorder. People who are bipolar will often become manic when they take antidepressants without an antipsychotic medication too. I say this because you report being more outspoken. Go and see a psychiatrist, and then take the medication he gives you. If you were diagnosed with diabetes, you wouldn't hesitate to take insulin. Mood disorders have a physical cause. Instead of fearing being dependent, be glad that there is a medication that can make your life manageable.
well for one thing, if you have a chemical imbalance due to depression, any med you are on is going to take 6 weeks or more to really show an affect...and if you went off of the Celexa cold turkey, without weaning off of it in lower and lower doses over a period of a few weeks, you did yourself more harm than good, and if your hormones and chemicals weren't all that off - they are now. Go take a look at the Celexa website if you don't believe me.
So if I were you, I'd take a second thought as to what your therapist is saying about feeling the effects of it.and get back on the medication, and this time, when you think you feel better, you consult your doctor before making any changes.
Your symptoms sound a lot like what I've experienced. My diagnoses is Bi Polar 2 Disorder, or what was once called "Manic Depression". I've seen many doctors and have been prescribed many different medications. If you can live with your symptoms then don't medicate. I for one think that would be a big mistake on your part. Things can and do get worse. Why the reluctance to stay medicated? It's not a social handicap as it was years and years ago. It's like having a headache, take the damn aspirin and be done with it.
i am not a doctor, simply human, and in treatment. i took a variety of anti depressants for just over a year, they helped in the short term, but then just stopped (and one actually made my symptoms much worse). i quit taking them, and dedicated myself to therapy, and educating myself. only this way, have i found relief from depression and anxiety. i am not opposed to anti-depressants, some people need them, but you have to take an active role in your well being. keep trying, keep exploring your options, communicate regularly with your health care professionals. its not always easy, or quick, sad to say. just keep trying. good luck.
If you are taking anti depressants then you already have a mental disorder. Are you crazy or something?
We all have problems. Why must we be afraid of the solutions.
Lets say your car was running low on gas one day, would you say NO to buying gas because you were afraid that your car would become dependent on gasoline? No, you would accept the fact that your car needs gas to run or else it will stop running.
I hope I am not comming off sounding like a jerk because I am only trying to help you see a similarity with something that is quite practical.
Your questioion was...
"If I continue to deny the need to take anti-depressants, will I end up having a mental disorder"
My answer no. Although your question is written in a way so that you can continue to deny an already exhisting problem.
WE all deny every one of our problems, perhaps it is only human nature. When another human tells us that we may not be what others consider normal we all tell that person they are wrong.
People who are shorter than average when asked about their height might make up an excuse like, I am not short, My growth was just stunted when I was growing up. They make up an excuse while denying the plain truth.
That is how all people are.
Just because we are told we have a condition does not mean it is the end of the world. It doesn't even mean that it is permanent.
The anti-depressants that was suggested for you probably would have helped you avoid the things you are feeling now, and may not have been a permanent form of treatment. But it now seems to me that you may have progreesed into mood swings which is no fun, believe me. It is normal to not want to be dependent on any thing, but it is much harder not to take meds for it, I have bipolar and have tried, it is just not worth it.
Final thoughts... Just swallow your pride and take what is prescribed, and or suggested for you. AS I am sure your car thanks you for filling it up every week or so if given proper time and good effort you will thank god that God sent Psyciatric meds for psycological problems.
If you are still not convinced guess what they used to do to children about thrity years ago who were experiencing "mood swings"? Electroshock therapy. And it was not just a slight spark to the head. they would zap the child even after they passed out from the experience. Once or even twice a week.
So instead of denying what others tell you count your blessings for meds like Celexia, because if it were not for them you might not have an option and would be getting your brain cells fried for no reason as it was discovered it really did not help.
I hope I helped to clarify and perhaps change the way you look at treatment for mental illnesses. Pls know that I am not trying to convince you you have a problem.
AS Always I hoped I helped and if you have questions pls email. My response time varies.
Yours truly,
KDII
Here's some news, if you've been diagnosed with depression, and have been prescribed meds for that depression, you already HAVE a mental disorder. That's what depression is! Taking the meds (if they work) is much better than putting yourself, and other people through the hell of your depression. I hope this helps and good luck.
