How can I deal with my clinical depression better?

Hi. I was diagnosed with clinical depression awhile back, and I'm wondering how I can deal with it better.

In the beginning, I used painkillers. Not the smartest idea. I ended up getting addicted. I fought through that addiction though (Of course I had a will to live. Dunno what for, but it's there), and I haven't touched the damn things in about two months. I've figured out that writing helps a little bit, but lately it seems that writing isn't doing too much for me.

Is there anything else, preferably nothing with medication involved, that I could do to help fight the depression?

Answer:
Hi, there are many things you could try which will improve your depression.

Take a look here for some ideas - http://www.self-help-mental-health-depre...

Hope this helps.
I drink
i had a small bout of clinical depression and what helped me was knowing that no matter how bad i felt, things would get better. i just told myself that, and made myself believe that. listen to the good charlotte song "hold on", it really helped me.
It's almost impossible to find anything to help it except with medication. Why haven't you tried an anti-depressant? Taking pain killers make no sense to me.
Sunlight, exercise and sex are proven to release chemicals in your brain that combat depression.
if you're not in love, you should try it. takes your mind of of anything.
or community service could help. you would feel sorry for others and not be so sad about yourself, while simultaneously helping the world.
if not, get into something you realy love. (e.g. martial arts -->go competitive, or go to a temple) something extreme that will temporarily take your mind off depression or make you happy. if only for a while, a moment of happiness will stand out.
almost anythign will work, if you have the will to live.
Here are some tips that I have used for myself:
- keep yourself surrounded with positive people
- do not keep those in your life that make you feel like less of
a person
- make time for yourself, to do what you enjoy
- journal everyday, write your feelings down
- get involved, join a sports team (even just recreationally!) or
a club
- get a pet!
- go for a walk every night
- do not hibernate in your house/apartment

Anyways, I hope these tips help. I wish you all the best!
Are you seeing a therapist of any sort? If you can find one that is suitable to what you need (not "How does that make you feel?") it can really help out having a professional person to talk to. I deal with the same thing. Writing was great for me as well, but like you, I found that it wasn't doing as much for me. So I went to the next step and sought out a therapist. Give it a shot. Most therapists accept health insurance so it can be affordable. Depression is a tough thing to deal with. I took the pain killer route too. I also took the alcohol and other drug route. I did anything to make me feel something other than the crappy feelings I had. But talking to someone can really release a lot of issues buried deep inside you. And they may be able to help you trigger exactly what is causing your depression.
Go buy yourself something and think of you as the most important person in the world. Do for U. This depression thing will pass if you stop feeding it with attention. Its a hard thing to deal with but you can get past it. Your important.and you just need to start believing that.
go to web md bipolar disorder support group they help me a lot I.M.me on yahoo messinger if you need to talk.
Find a good therapist, get on some meds and look online at which vitamins are good. I do know that omega fish oils are good for brain receptors
Go outside and get some prolonged exposure to the sun.
Go for a walk on the woods alone and just look.
Observe the world through the eyes of someone who will someday have to leave it. Taste everything carefully with all of your senses.
Tell yourself over and over that life is ok and you don't have to be sad. You are allowed to be happy.
Be certain to get alot of outside exercise- that is important.
Keep in mind that what you do today will be with you when you go to bed at the end of the day so make it worth thinking about!

Hey Lor,
Firstly... Please ignore the small-minded wankers suggesting to drown you sorrows in drugs and booze - I can guarantee it's just another list of problems you will create for yourself.
Secondly, Don't get too upset with the people telling you to get over it and it will pass, they don't understand what it feels like to truly feel depression (or they would know better than to say it).
Solution? Lots of hard work - why don't you want medication? Anti-depressants can definitely help the situation, even if only for a short amount of time until you feel more in control. I also really recommend speaking about it with a psychologist or counsellor - someone that will let you be you in a session, and talk about all the things that seem to be worrying you. There are some helpful vitamins you could use if you don't want prescription medicine. Writing is a great outlet, even if you find what you write is mostly negative - get it out, put it to paper and work through it.
After three years of depression, I can finally say I have it under control - no meds, no therapy, living life - It can happen, but you need to work at fighting this as much as you'd fight to battle cancer or any other disease or illness.
I wish you all the luck in the world... It really is worth living.
There were other great suggestions in some of these answers about getting out of the house, sunshine, air, getting rid of the negative people in your life, surrounding yourself with the positives, etc... It's worth a try??!!
when your feeling depressed remind yourself that your in control and go out riding around, for a walk, draw, paint, call a friend, workout, go shopping these are a few of things i do, i have suffered from depression since i was a child in my teens i got put on meds (paxil) and while on them i had no feelings no emotions and i hated it and i had gotten to the point that i was going to end my life but i struggled with this decision and decided fck the meds and fck the depression and i moved and took nothing but the clothes on my back started my life over and make sure to always stay busy when i feel the depression taking over and i fight it and so far im winning im alive and for once i am happy i hope you can do the same
