Do you think suicide should be illegal?
Answer:
Yes, it hurts a lot of people, even the first responders like the police and ambulance personnel are affected negatively. They are in those jobs to help people and feel very bad if they cannot. Also, unsuccessful suicide leaves the person much worse off than before in many cases, under a lot of care and if it was an overdose they could be comatose or a vegetable for the rest of their life.
It prolly should, if only to discourage people from attempting it.
Umm what are they gonna do? lock up a person after they kill themselves?
that wouldn't stop n e one if they're dead they wouldn't have to deal with the reprecussions
How do you propose to prevent suicide attempts? Obviously, one who succeeds in suicide can't go to prison now can they?
Suicide is not illegal, but failing to die with a suicidal attempt is.
lol what are they gona ... kill us?!
No. It's their life.. Besides.. What are they gonna do? The death penalty? Idiots... Idiots.. Idiots..
no..what good would that do?? get real That won't stop or deter anyone...Folk that suicide already don't care that they are leaving loved ones behind to deal with this, why would this matter to them. They don't care that its a sin and that to me is worse than illegal and that doesn't stop them either.
Suicide is a very selfish act.Making it illegal will do nothing to change a suiciders mind.
Now think about that...how would you enforce it?
What!? If you commit suicide . . . you are dead! Seems kind of silly to convict a person who is already deceased. The government already wastes enough of my money as it is!
Ok Im assuming this is for failed attempts. Now think about how it would all play out. You have someone who is down on life already and then they are thrown in jail. Now what makes you think they are going to not want to kill themselves in jail. Who is protecting who here? The key is to make mental health care less of a stigma so people can feel more comfortable in getting help. I have made a couple of attempts myself and the only thing that has helped me is my therapist. It was someone listening to what I had to say rather than someone locking me up and making me feel less and less of a person.
Well, first of all, it is illegal. Should it be legal? Yes.
The fundamental question here is: whose body is it? If you believe that your body is in fact the property of the state, then by all means, it should be illegal. If you believe that is in fact your body, you should have the right to end it. I believe in the most fundamental definition of Liberty and therefore side with the legality of suicide.
Should that right be unqualified? No. Suicide is serious stuff, and quite permanent. State sanctioned suicides should be tightly controlled to insure the soundness of mind of the suicidee, and perhaps even to ascertain if the person is suffering a terminal disease. Government powers in commerce regulation should insure that suicide does not become part of a commercial venture, for instance, selling your body parts after suicide.
But should the government use the powers of the criminal justice system to control your decision? Absolutely not.
... it is.
It's just not enforced. Failed suicide attempts go to hospitals or counseling, not prison. Because really, what would that accomplish?
Assisted suicide yes.
IT IS ILLEGAL TO KILL YOURSELF
No, and it should not be a consideration. There is nothing so bad that it does not have a remedy.
If you are at the bottom of the barrel, there are only two things to do, roll over and die or look up and seek God.
This is not His plan for you. What ever you plight, if it has an earthly consequence, that would have to be attended too.
Suicide is not in God's plan, with Him it is against the law.
Not to sound rude or dumb...but I don't think that will stop someone from killing themselves and once they do it (and succeed)...there would be no one to charge.
sporkk has the exactly right answer. it is not enforced, but because it is illegal, people can be forced to see the doc for help.
Sure! Easy to prosecute someone deceased .Smart !(sorry but that was a Blonde question)
First of all...it is illegal, but what the heck does it matter?? the person is dead!! if anything, the fact that it is illegal will make people want to do it more. Does the fact that alcohol is illegal for anyone under 21 to drink it make the people under 21 not drink it? no, it makes them want it more because it is illegal. some people just break the laws just to break it. I think the gov is wasting their time coming up w/ stupid laws like this...shouldnt they be thinking about more important things?
I felt compelled to answer this and clarify some things.
1.) Suicide IS illegal
2.) It IS enforced.
3) Enforcing it has nothing to do with making a person whose suicide attempt failed seek counseling. It is all about Life Insurance. Basically, if a person has a life insurance policy that is worth any amount of money and he/she commits suicide, the life insurance policy would then belong to the government. In other words, whatever money would normally be allotted to the person's next of kin will be paid to the government if the insured commited suicide.
I guess it's one less reason to kill yourself...knowing your family will suffer even financially and that the government will be one up on you!
Who's going to accept the punishment--the one who is deceased?
