Is addiction fairly described as the inability to deny compulsion?
Answer:
Yes ... That's a pretty way to describe it,
however , only to that thing that you are addicted too. sorry i can no tell ya , just
how that works.. as always being a recovering so & so....
Because NA and AA are thinly veiled christian organizations, and they exist primarily to beat the fear of god into you.
*EDIT*
I'm serious. Try getting past the 2nd step of NA or AA without professing your belief in god. You can lie, but then.. what's the point in doing it if you're going to lie?
That's why they say you're never "cured". Because if it were up to you, you wouldn't need them.
Addiction is a disease of the brain that causes changes in neurobiology that can not be reversed once in place. Therefore, one is not cured. The best outcome is long term remission.
Your way would be like saying once a cucumber becomes a pickle you can change it back to a cucumber again.
In reality, you can't.
Think of it as an allergy of the body and an obsession of the mind.Addicts have abnormal reactions to what they are addicted to. Once they start then can't stop because they have lost the ability to control it. Like they say, "One drink is too many and 1000 isn't enough". AA has nothing to do with putting the fear of God into anyone. It's solution rests with finding a higher power that you yourself are comfortable with and have defined yourself as well as other things that are meant to help you recreate your life. Despite that fact that some people have had terrible experiences with AA, which most likely says more about the group they were going to and not AA itself, AA has for a little over 70 years now provided a way for alcoholics and addicts to find a way out of their miserable way of life and try for something better. But if it doesn't work for you then go find something else.
An addict is someone who has a weakness - somehow the addict managed to get himself or herself addicted whereas the normal person would have seen this coming and anyway would not have gone quite so overboard in the first place.
