How fast does any medication work in when i've got GAD?
Answer:
If you were perscribed a benzoadipine (like Xanax or Ativan) then it should start working right away, as they are immidiate release and work on the anxiety receptors of the brain.
If you were given an anti-depressant then it will start to work in 2-4 weeks. Your doc should have given you something for short-term as well as long term
I don't think its a good idea to start on medications for General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) at your age. You probably need to practice being the way you want to be--the kind of person you want to be and don't start relying on drugs.
Its a good idea to have a clear head (mind) than to have your mind boggled up on some medication.
You are very young, so don't indulge just yet. It is normal for young people to not yet be "cool". Work on it, and in time you will get it.
(I tried meds once for GAD, didn't feel like "myself" so immediately got off them.)
If I were you, I would talk to your family doctor about your options. I'm not sure if there are any SSRI's (Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors) that are approved for use in children under the age of 18. Now, this is not to say that you can't use them, but there has recently been controversy over the use of them in children under 18 years of age.
If you and your doc decide to go the medication route, you have choices. Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Prozac, and others are SSRI's and work to correct the seratonin levels in your brain. These can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to get maximum effects. Benzodiazepines are quicker working and are often used right when a person feels anxious. They can take effect in about 30 minutes to an hour. They usually last 6-8 hours.
