How did they come up with the DSM and what does it really mean is it fact or subjective oppinion?

Answer:
Psychology is far from a definate science. The DSM isn't exactly fact, but it's the best educated guess that we currently have.
DSM stands for diagnostic and statistical manual of international classification of diseases.
So it is the division of the mental disease on the basis of symptoms.
There are hundreds of mental disorders listed yet most commonly known are depression, mania, schizophernia, anxiety disorders etc.
It is not subjective it is based on more than 200 hundred years of research and practice and yet it is not flawless and this system is in its infancy.
The DSM has undergone several changes, involving an amazing number of professionals in mental health. Over 1000 people took part in putting together the DSM-IV, the current version. The purpose was to find a common language, so that mental health professionals could be on the same page whenever they needed to work together to help someone.
There are obviously positive aspects to the DSM, and negative. It does help professionals identify what's going on with someone, and that helps in developing treatment plans that are appropriate.
It's also very general - each person is unique - and the DSM isn't about identifying differences, how people may have come to have a symptom and what it might represent to them. In that sense, it's superficial.
