If cigarettes are so bad for you why is the government allowing them to be sold?
Answer:
Well, there are these people called lobbyist, who work for a companies interest. They meet with congressmen and women and offer them tons of money to support their cause. The tobacco industry has a lot of money to throw around, therefore they've got a large number of the people Americans elect in their pocket. Sad but true.
goverment makes money on taxes. and half of them smoke.
cz they dont care about u they care bout the money they get outa them
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...
Because the government is making so many d@mn tax dollars off of it.
Though the last time a checked, the cigarette tax was cheaper than the tax on food/groceries.
Only in America.
The tobacco industry is very powerful and unless someone can find a direct link between tobacco use and death, tobacco will still be on the shelves. Research has found that smoking can influence your chances of becomeing ill, we have yet to find a direct link.
Read about the Prohibition era in the 1920's...government actually tried to legislate morality, and banned all alcohol, beer, whisky, and wine...if you can believe it. It didn't work. It caused a huge black market, and the rise of gangsters supplying what Americans wanted...Tobacco is very habit forming, and people addicted to it will do ANYTHING to get it.
They learned from that, and now the approach is simply to tax it and make it illegal to smoke in most places...
Canada tried to overtax tobacco a few years ago, and that caused a giant black market, it was estimated that over 50% of tobacco sold was smuggled in. They gave up on that, because the Canadian Govt was actually taking in LESS money than before. Some states are trying huge taxes, don't know if that will work.
because cigarettes being made makes jobs for hundreds of thousands of people, and if they took the cigarette company factories out people would be without jobs. then without jobs the government would look bad for putting tons of people out of a job and also this would make the economical industry of the USA look really bad. i do not like cigarettes but people have to have jobs.
because people still buy them. it's a capitalistic society and they don't give a sh!t about the enviornment! so, that's why. DON'T SMOKE!
I know, i have been wondering that very same thing for a while. And another thing, i notice that the people who smoke never complain about them, could it be that they are not as bad as we first were told? The people who talk about how unhealthy they are, don't smoke, so what does that tell us?
Government should not legislate morality. Look at what happened with prohibition in the 1920s. The government should only do what the private sector can't do or won't do. This is a republican philosophy. The difference in republicans, socialists and communists all has to do with the degree to which you think the government should be involved with your life. Repulican views are for as little government as possible. Socialists believe that everyone should be financially equal and the government should be used to redistribute wealth and take care of everyone. Communists views are that the government is totally in charge and personal freedoms and liberties are unnecessary. I definitely fall into the Republican category. Most democrats especially liberal democrats fall into the Socialist category. China and North Korea are communist countries. So to answer your question, the government should allow cigarettes to be sold until they are declared illegal because we should take responsibility for ourselves. Thanks for indulging me.
