For those you had suffered prostate or testicular cancer?
Answer:
I am not a guy, but my best friend's father was told he had prostrate cancer in 2000. He had no signs, it was picked up from blood test. From what I understand if you have any signs it is probably too far advanced to do much about, but I do not know this for sure. Anyway, my friends father had surgery which he recovered from in about a week. They checked (blood test) him every 3 months, and on his 2nd check the cancer reappeared. He then went through a whole lot of radiation treatments. A year after the cancer reappeared again nut was very low on the scale. It is now 2007, he is alive and well with a low reading on the cancer scale. Her is 75 works every day, and travels a lot all over the world. That's about what I know about it. I know men are supposed to have annual blood tests because that is about the only way they know if you have prostate cancer or not.
I'm not a guy but I work in a urology office... we deal with these kinds of cancer all the time.
Prostate cancer is diagnosed by testing your PSA level (its a blood test) this should be done yearly at least and if it is elevated and is proven not to be an infection the urologist recommends a biopsy. In our office we use a transrectal approach and take 12 tissue samples that are sent to the pathology office. The amount of cancer is then determined by a scale called the Gleasen scale. Treatment is discussed between the pt and the Doc and it sort of depends on how advaced and where the cancer is in the gland. Radiation therapy is usually recommended and also sometimes an injection to slow down testosterone production (called Lupron). Generally in early stages men don't have any symptoms except for possibly an elarged prostate which can cause urinary symptoms such as trouble going and problems with frequency.
Testicular cancer usually presents itself as a hard mass in the testicle and is diagnosed by a scrotal ultrasound and a couple of blood tests... usually it is recommended that the testicle be removed (sometimes both) they can put in a prostectic testicle so it seems like they are still there.
Both types of cancer can spread pretty quickly so generally if the cancer is advanced the Doc will order something called a bone scan and a chest xray to determine if the cancer has spread to another body system.
Hope this helps! Thanks for listening!
